TAD NewsDesk, New Delhi; After a prolonged restriction for a long time, India has finally permitted import of chilled and fresh potatoes from Bhutan till January 31st, 2021. Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said “Import of potatoes is allowed for import from Bhutan without license upto January 31, 2021,” in a notification.
In a separate notification, the DGFT announced the ease of norms for the import of potatoes till January 31st, 2021. This has been done under the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) scheme which made the procedure of sending the hard copy of the application via mail or post null and void.
But at the same time, the procedure also underlines that only one application against one IEC will be considered and the import consignments are expected to reach necessarily on or before January 31 next year.
The DGFT said,
“Successful applicants will have to ensure that the import consignments reach the Indian ports on or before January 31, 2021. Request for extension of time will not be entertained.”
On the previous day, the finance ministry has notified an order permitting the import of 10,00,000 MT of potatoes till January 31, 2021, at an in-quota tariff rate of 10%.
Consumer affairs minister, Piyush Goyal said,
“We are going to import about 10 lakh tonnes of potato and bring prices under control.”
The prices of onions have been brought into control after a lot of endeavours in the past month, and the government is planning to do the same for potatoes and other pulses.
