The University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario, was established in 1964 from three founding colleges: the Ontario Veterinary College, the Ontario Agricultural College and the Macdonald Institute. It has eight colleges and says it has more than 36,000 undergraduate and graduate students across its Guelph campus, the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto and the Ridgetown Campus in southwestern Ontario.
Agriculture is taught and researched in the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), which opened in 1874 as the Ontario School of Agriculture and Experimental Farm. OAC says it has about 3,700 diploma, undergraduate and graduate students and six academic units, including the Department of Plant Agriculture, the Department of Animal Biosciences and the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics. Its researchers use research centres owned by the Government of Ontario through Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario and operated by the university through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, including the Ontario Dairy Research Centre and several Ontario Crops Research Centre sites. Businesses can host OAC students through internships and other placements.
