The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public university with two main campuses, in Vancouver and in Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley. It says it has 72,100 students and has operated since 1915. UBC reports 1,064 research projects with industry partners and 296 companies spun off from UBC research.

Agriculture and food are taught and researched in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS), based at UBC’s Point Grey Campus, which describes itself as one of UBC’s three founding faculties, with first graduates in 1921. LFS lists four research centres: the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, the Dairy Education & Research Centre, the UBC Wine Research Centre and the Dan On Food and Beverage Innovation Centre, and research groups in applied biology, food science and food and resource economics. Forestry is taught in the Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship, which runs two research forests, the Alex Fraser Research Forest near Williams Lake and the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest near Maple Ridge.
