Zhejiang University (ZJU) is based in Hangzhou. It traces its origins to the Qiushi Academy, founded in 1897, and says the current university was re-established in 1998 through a merger with Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. It has seven campuses.
The College of Agriculture and Biotechnology (CAB) was established in July 1999, and the college dates its history to the Zhejiang Institute for Agricultural Teachers, founded in 1910. It has five departments (Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Tea Science and Applied Biological Science) and nine research institutes, including Crop Science, Insect Science, Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology and Nuclear-Agricultural Science. Its laboratories include a National Key Laboratory of Rice Biology, co-built with the China Rice Research Institute, and joint centres with IBM and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The college says that since 2000 it has set up more than 70 demonstration bases for agricultural technology and trained more than 20,000 farmers. ZJU founded its Science Park in 2001 to incubate start-ups and support technology transfer.
