China Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing is a university directly under China’s Ministry of Education. It traces its history to the agricultural college of the Imperial University of Peking, founded in 1905, and took its current form in 1995 through the merger of Beijing Agricultural University and Beijing Agricultural Engineering University. It has 21 colleges and two campuses in Haidian District.
The university says its research covers germplasm innovation, crop breeding, farmland protection, livestock production, animal and plant disease control, smart agriculture and agricultural machinery. It reports 21 national research platforms, including 11 national key laboratories, as well as 23 off-campus experimental stations and 225 Science and Technology Backyards across China. Its College of Agronomy hosts the National Maize Improvement Center. CAU says it works with companies including Huawei, Tencent and Dabeinong Group, and that its joint college with the University of Surrey, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2025, was formally established in June 2026.
