The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a public land-grant university and research institution in Madison, Wisconsin, founded in 1848 and part of the Universities of Wisconsin. Its College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), established in 1889, teaches and researches across departments including Agricultural and Applied Economics, Animal and Dairy Sciences, Entomology, Forest and Wildlife Ecology, Plant Pathology, and Soil and Environmental Sciences.
CALS operates a network of 12 agricultural research stations across the state, including the on-campus CALS Greenhouses; the college says the stations have more than 8,000 acres combined. Its centres include the Center for Dairy Research, the Food Research Institute, the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems, the Renk Agribusiness Institute and the Wisconsin Crop Innovation Center. The college says its scientists regularly partner with businesses on research, and that companies can license patented campus discoveries through the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Industry clients also use the Babcock Hall Dairy Plant to evaluate processes, ingredients and equipment.
