The University of Reading is in Reading, United Kingdom, and operates under a Royal Charter granted in 1926, when it became an independent institution. It says it has more than 27,000 students from 147 countries, with campuses in Reading, Henley-upon-Thames, Johannesburg and Iskandar.

Agriculture is taught and researched in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, which says it was founded in 1892 and teaches more than 800 students a year from around 80 countries. It has five departments: Agri-Food Economics and Marketing, Animal Sciences, Crop Science, International Development and Sustainable Land Management. The university has about 800 hectares of mixed farming land and woodland, including Hall Farm at Arborfield, home to a commercial dairy herd and the Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR), and Sonning Farm, home to the Crop Research Unit. The school lists research alliances with EIT Food, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Rural Business Research, which delivers the annual Farm Business Survey for government, and the Ceres Agri-Tech Knowledge Exchange Partnership.
