The University of Minnesota is a public research university with a land-grant mission, founded in 1851, with five campuses: Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester and the Twin Cities. Its College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS), based in St. Paul, has 12 academic departments, including Agronomy and Plant Genetics, Animal Science, Applied Economics, Forest Resources, Horticultural Science, and Soil, Water and Climate.

CFANS runs 10 research and outreach centres across Minnesota, among them the Cloquet Forestry Center, the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center and the Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca. The Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station funds university research on agricultural and forest products, horticultural crops, human nutrition and environmental quality. The college says the Honeycrisp apple originated there. It also says its Integrated Animal Systems Biology team collaborates with organisations including the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Cargill. CFANS offers 14 undergraduate majors and 13 graduate programmes.
