The Université de Montpellier is a university in Montpellier, France, established on 1 January 2015 through the merger of the universities Montpellier 1 and Montpellier 2, and an experimental public institution (EPE) since 1 January 2022. It traces its history to a Faculty of Medicine founded in 1220 and a papal bull of 1289. The university says it has more than 51,000 students in 17 faculties, schools and institutes.

Its agricultural research is organised through the Agriculture, Environment, Biodiversity (AEB) research cluster, set up in December 2017 within the MUSE Foundation. The cluster brings together more than 3,000 permanent staff from organisations including BRGM, CIRAD, CNRS, IFREMER, INRAE and IRD, with the University of Montpellier, Institut Agro Montpellier and CIHEAM-IAMM. It reports 37 laboratories in agriculture, environment and biodiversity and four long-term thematic projects, including Plant Adaptation to Global Changes and Agroecology and Food Systems. Doctoral training runs through the GAIA doctoral school, and the cluster lists a UNESCO Chair in World Food Systems among its key figures.
