The University of Bonn (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) was founded in 1818 and is organised in seven faculties. It reports 31,318 students, according to figures last updated in December 2025, and has been a University of Excellence since 2019.

Agriculture is taught and researched in the Faculty of Agricultural, Nutritional and Engineering Sciences (AEI), which combines agricultural, nutritional and food sciences with geodesy. The faculty names five research foci, including digital technologies for sustainable crop production, bioeconomy, and the effects of land use change and water management on climate change. It is home to PhenoRob, which the faculty describes as the only German Cluster of Excellence in agriculture, with funding continuing from 2026. Field research runs at Campus Klein-Altendorf, for arable, crop and horticultural trials; Campus Frankenforst, for animal science; and Campus Wiesengut, the faculty’s experimental farm for organic farming. Its research centres include the Center of Integrated Dairy Research (CIDRe) and the Horticulture Competence Centre (KoGa) at Campus Klein-Altendorf.
