Hokkaido University is a national university corporation based in Sapporo, Japan, with a second campus in Hakodate. It was founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College and reports 18,480 students, including 1,998 international students. Kiyohiro Houkin was reappointed President for a four-year term from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2030.
Agriculture is taught and researched by the School of Agriculture, the Graduate School of Agriculture and the Research Faculty of Agriculture. The School of Agriculture has seven departments: Agrobiology and Bioresources, Applied Bioscience, Bioscience and Chemistry, Forest Science, Animal Science, Bioresource and Environmental Engineering, and Agricultural Economics.
Field work is supported by the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, which runs seven experimental forests, including Teshio and Tomakomai, the Sapporo Experimental Farm and the Shizunai Livestock Farm. The faculty describes its university forest as six localities in Hokkaido totalling 70,000 ha, plus a site in Wakayama Prefecture, and says a 470 ha stock farm keeps about 150 cattle and 100 horses.
