Mills in India are looking forward to an even larger increase in the consumption level of sugar. It would be a means to manage and get an output of the oversupply happened partly because of the favourable incentives provided to the farmers this year.

To gain an advantage on the initiative, the mills have begun an online campaign which includes webinars and workshops. Speakers from different fields like nutritionists and endocrinologists, public health experts and medical practitioners are invited to participate and share their expertise.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association defended the position of sugar and told its advantages,

“Sugar is the most preferred source of the body’s fuel for brain power, muscle energy and every natural process that goes into proper functioning of our body cells.”

The Association said that India’s consumption of sugar is 19 kilograms per capita per year compared with a global average of 23 kilograms. The social media campaign is proposing that cane-based sweetener is more unhealthy and hence should be avoided.

According to Sudhanshu Pandey, the top bureaucrat at the food ministry, if the economy is to prosper in this sector, the per capita consumption has to rise to the global average and then the domestic demand will climb by 5.2 million tons a year. This would not only help manage and get output out of the surplus but along with would also help reduce the overseas sales. As a result of which the government would save money on exports.

India is planning to export 6 million tons of sugar in the year 2020-21, this surplus has been boosted as a result of ample amount of rain in the year. India is also the second-largest producer of sugar, and exported 5.65 million tons of it in 2019-20 and this year it plans on enhancing its supply.
