The Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is a public university maintained by the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Created in 1934, it says it has 43 teaching and research units across campuses in São Paulo, Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto and São Carlos.
Its agriculture school is the Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz” (Esalq) in Piracicaba, founded in 1901 and one of USP’s founding units in 1934. Esalq says it works across agricultural, environmental, biological and applied social sciences, with seven undergraduate courses, 12 departments and 130 laboratories, on more than 3,800 hectares that include the experimental stations of Anhembi, Anhumas, Itatinga and Fazenda Areão. Also in Piracicaba is the Centro de Energia Nuclear na Agricultura (CENA), and the Faculdade de Zootecnia e Engenharia de Alimentos is in Pirassununga. Esalq says its planned Esalq Science Park at Fazenda Areão, in an advanced planning phase, is intended to connect researchers, startups, companies and investors.
