The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) was established in 1977, building on more than 250 years of Swedish education in veterinary medicine, agriculture and forestry, the university says. Its main campuses are in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, and it also works at research stations, experimental parks and educational sites across Sweden. SLU has four faculties with 30 departments and similar units.

The Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences (NJ) carries out research, teaching and environmental monitoring in agriculture and environment, including sustainable food production, bioenergy and industrial raw materials, the faculty says. Other faculties cover horticulture and crop production science, forest sciences, and veterinary medicine and animal science. SLU runs four field research stations, at Röbäcksdalen, Lövsta, Lanna and Lönnstorp, and around 60 long-term agricultural experiments. The Swedish Livestock Research Centre at Lövsta, inaugurated in 2012, keeps dairy cattle, pigs and poultry, and SLU says it is intended for its own researchers, international researchers and researchers from private enterprise.
