The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is based in Ås, Norway. It traces its history to the Higher Agricultural School in Ås, which officially began on 1 October 1859, and took its current name in 2014 when the University of the Environment and Biosciences (UMB) merged with the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, which moved to Ås in 2021. NMBU says its research and study programmes cover food, health, environmental protection, climate and sustainable use of natural resources.

The Faculty of Biosciences researches the production and use of plants, livestock and fish through its Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences and Department of Plant Sciences. Its research centres and large projects include Foods of Norway, the National Center for Urban Agriculture and the PheNo plant phenotyping infrastructure. The university’s organisation also includes the Livestock Production Research Centre and the Centre for Plant Research in Controlled Climate (SKP), which NMBU co-owns with the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) and which serves companies as well as researchers.
