ETH Zurich is a university for science and technology in Zürich, Switzerland, which it says dates back to 1855. Agriculture is taught and researched in the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS). ETH says it is the only university in Switzerland to offer a degree programme in Agricultural Sciences, with master’s specialisations in Agricultural Economics, Animal Sciences and Plant Sciences.
Within D-USYS, the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) studies sustainable plant and animal production systems and interactions between insects and crop plants. The department runs the ETH Research Station for Plant Sciences Lindau-Eschikon, with greenhouses, climate chambers and field plots, and takes part in the World Food System Center and the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center, which links plant scientists at the University of Zurich, ETH Zurich and the University of Basel. In October 2026 the department profiled Terensis, a company founded by two of its agricultural sciences PhD graduates that combines crop models with satellite data to forecast yields.
